Why Goals Increase Your Sense Of Purpose
Increasing your life's meaning or giving yourself a purpose is a key component of being happy. When you feel like you have something to live for, you will feel happier and more content. Maybe it's religion, maybe it’s family, maybe it's your job, whatever gives you purpose in life is important. The challenge of finding purpose is something everyone experiences. Sometimes, we have to make our own purpose in life independent of externals. Having a healthy set of goals is the perfect way to instantly increase your sense of purpose in life.
Completing Goals and Accomplishment
When you set a goal, you are setting a step for yourself in the right direction. For example, if you are on a run, you might set a goal to run without stopping for 20 minutes. The idea of successfully completing that goal pushes you to carry on when maybe you would have stopped. You are driven to complete goals by the anticipated sense of accomplishment and achievement.
Goals and Increased Purpose
Goals help increase your sense of purpose because they are intentional. You are intentionally doing something, which is a purpose in itself. Even if your goal is as simple as making your bed each day, once you complete that daily task, your day gets a small boost of confidence, pushing you to complete other goals.
The Four Components Of Great Goals
The four key components of great goals are essential to success and maximize your sense of purpose.
1. Realistic/Achievable
Your goals should be achievable based on your current situation. You cannot expect to be able to run that marathon in one week when you haven’t trained. Instead, start with realistic goals and work your way up.
2. Timely
Set a time limit for yourself to complete the goal. For example, you could have a goal to wake up every day and make breakfast before 10 AM for a week. Once you complete the week, you can reevaluate and set a new goal.
3. Intentional
When you set intentional goals, you are consciously on a mission to complete them, which on its own, gives you a purpose.
4. A Level of Challenge
Challenges are subjective. Something that is extremely easy for one individual can be extremely challenging for the next. Being aware of the challenges you personally face will make setting realistic goals much easier.
Failure
Another component of goal-setting is accepting that you may not always successfully complete your goals. That is okay! Goals wouldn’t be worth completing if you were always successful the first time! With each failure, you can learn something and apply it to the next goal.
Once you learn how to set perfect goals, you will see the positive impact on your life. That being said, there is definitely a goal-setting learning curve.
